UK Labour Market – Youth unemployment declines

In the latest Labour Force Survey released by the Office for National Statistics it was announced that the number of unemployed young people (aged 16 to 24 years) fell by 60,000 to 464,000 for the period June to August 2018. This represents the lowest figure since comparable records for unemployment by age group began in 1992.

Commenting on the latest figures released Gi Group UK’s CEO Bev White said, “Allied with the 40 year low for unemployment across all age groups, this record low for youth unemployment raises even greater questions as to how organisations will find the new skills they need to survive and thrive in the future. It undoubtedly means that businesses will have to focus on retaining and upskilling individuals as it may not be possible to simply go out and source them from an already stretched labour market.”
