While the typical starting salary starts at around £20k, the current driver shortage has seen demand heighten and salaries increase, meaning the earning potential has become even more significant (depending on experience and training). Easy to get into
Becoming a fully certified HGV driver is easier – and less expensive – than you might think. Gaining the right certifications to drive a HGV doesn’t require a degree, but you will need to undergo a number of tests before you can get behind the wheel. Firstly you will need to be over the age of 18 and have a category B driving licence. Then you will need to complete a medical and apply for your provisional lorry drivers licence. Once you have this you’ll then need to pass a theory and practical test and gain your Driver Certificate of Professional Competence qualification.
It may sound a lot but the whole process only takes between 8-10 weeks and once qualified you’re ready to go. The costs of lessons aren’t too expensive either, especially when you consider the money you could be earning once you are up and running as a HGV driver. There are also many incentives to encourage new drivers to qualify so you may not even have to pay.
